Is poetry a good subject?

Scroll.jpgThere are strong voices within contemporary social theory and philosophy that advocate the view that aesthetics facts (matters of personal taste in formulating a necessarily subjective conception of beauty) are equally relevant in understanding human societies as are scientific and social facts. Aesthetic facts relate to fields as diverse as music, fine art, and literature. In other words, aesthetic facts are, at the risk of sounding oxymoronic, subjective judgements (subjective facts) as to how one piece of Art differs from another – art criticism, in a more regularised sense.

My apologies for the tedious first para. What I mean to say is that reasoned discussion is imperative for the development of knowledge in any field, be it in scientific, social or, in this case, aesthetic enquiry. It may be a bit misleading for me to refer to facts – there is, of course, is no one correct answer. The very fact that we have different, though generally speaking equally valid, points of view makes it necessary, and all the more exciting, that we engage in discussion, debate and a genuine exchange of ideas on areas of common interest to ensure that we learn and benefit from one another.

I think we need to talk about music as much as we can. It’s different inter-relations to other fields within the general umbrella of the Arts, music as a societal reflection, and more – I think it’s all relevant.

o ye verse-lover . . thou shalt be more precise whence dealing with music-lovers dwelling in Maldives . . correct me if i’m wrong . . was it your point that we shall take up poetry with music in our discussions? . . or was it your point that we should deal with fragile and insecure secret admirers of opposite or same sex in a fragile manner ? . . or was it that u were having a bad day at your work-place – a saloon ? C’mon man . . don’t let the romantic-tragedy part get u . . by the way I fully endorse your noble point of view with regard to poetrical views when discussing this “Music Thing” amongst ourselves . . Good point, there.. looking forward to more articles from you.

It seems that you joined the site to have a dig at my posting, given the acronym this seems likely. A warm welcome to you in any case. My point was that we should give more consideration to lyrics in the few songs we write. Since Dhoni I am yet to be impressed by anything from the local music scene in this regard.
