Who is playing where this 31st night?
Every year, in the last quarter, commercial-bands hunt for 31st night contracts and performance venues hunt for good bands. For bands, it is one of the most lucrative contracts in the whole year.
In the Maldives, this market base for bands is a supporting cottage industry directly related to the tourism industry. For this reason, the main performance venues are tourist resorts.
The amounts and types of contracts involved are very subjective. Contract values could be anything from US$4,000/= to US$10,000/= for one or two night’s package. For the not so lucky, some fall out due to complex negotiations, sub-standard ethics or due to over bargaining.
More recently, restaurants and cafés have also been taking the effort to try and include a musical performance in their 31st night itenary.
Bands usually polish up their repertoire to cater for longer performances and to play up-to-date covers to cater for their clients. Hence, it is one of the busiest times in a musician’s calendar.
