How to Practice – Part 1

Does practicing have a method? Yes, it does. And if it is not done in the proper method, the practice would be useless, or worse, it will be harmful. There are a couple of common methods that all musicians follow, no matter what instrument they play.

Practice sessions mainly fall into two parts. First being individual practice and the second being band or ensemble practice. Most of the factors and methods discussed here apply to both individual and band practice.

Quite often than not, perhaps due to unavailability of guidance, musicians tend to discard the individual practice and straight away jump on to band practices. It may appear to be more fun. However, if this is the case, more often than not, the result would be a combination of everyone’s mistakes practiced over and over again. It will be difficult to isolate and correct individual mistakes and hence more difficult to set a platform for productive band practices.

The Author of this post would like to know if this is a good topic to be discussed, and to be elaborated further. To facilitate participation and discussion, the Author has split this topic into a series, thereby leaving room for more individual thoughts on each aspect of practice. Comments and questions welcome.
