How to Practice – Part 2

In Part 1, we discussed that individual practice comes first before band practice. This post is about planning for practice.

Plan

Plan your practice sessions. Decide when and where. Ideally, the place would have to be a secluded private spot, free from distractions. This will help you to concentrate on your practice. Pick a time when you would be relaxed and be able to concentrate for about 45 minutes to 1 hour. Plan to switch off your mobile phone or not to answer all your incoming calls unless it is very important.

Next, plan what you would be practicing and how much you would want to achieve in the practice session. Set realistic goals here. If the piece is difficult, plan your practice to reach your goals step-by-step, one step in each practice session. You can never master any piece in a few practice sessions.

In planning, it is important to remember that the more frequently you practice, you would achieve better results rather than, the total amount of time you practice. For example, it is better to practice your scales 15 minutes a day rather than 105 minutes once a week.

To have an effective practice schedule, it would be best if it is set for a certain time of the day, everyday. Your body and mind will start to adjust for these times and would help you prepare better mentally. If carried on regularly with persistence, it would also help form a habit to practice.

Be punctual. This would help you achieve the most within the minimum amount of time. In a band setting, it would also not waste other’s precious time. In a professional setting, punctuality is indispensable.
