Saving the Day for Our Superheroes

Most musicians I know lead a superheroes life. They do their mundane and ordinary jobs white and blue collar (collarless too) during the daytime. However at night they put on their gear and change to some rock star (or even a wedding singer).

The more sinister fact behind the double lives is that they simply could not make ends meet leading only a life of a ‘superhero’ although its been their passion since childhood.

But wait a minute… We’re bombarded all the time with the latest gossip about the fabulous lives our pop idols lead elsewhere. How do they buy their mansions and the fancy cars? One simple fact is that they’ve sold a couple of millions albums (at the very least) and get steady stream of revenue from royalties for airtime in radio, tv and other media outlets. So why can’t we do that? At this point I would like to focus on my original intention behind this post (unfortunately after 3 paragraphs).

Why can’t we be successful selling our original stuff. Lets get over the usual excuses. That we are a tiny tiny community. There simply isn’t any good original music. That we don’t have any proper copyright or intellectual property law to protect. Lets breakdown one of these issues.

We are a tiny community. Sure we are and we can’t expect to sell millions but even in the last census taken there were a reported 100,000 people living in Male’ alone. Surely almost everyone enjoys music (don’t we?). If 1 in 100 people in male’ bought a cd its like a 1000 cd’s sold. That amount could make break even for an original music project and (at least) encourage him/her to do another record.

So why aren’t we buying? Is Rf 150 too much in this age of bittorrents and other hip sharing mechanisms? Surely we don’t gripe about spending that much over coffee even daily.

Please share your thoughts on how we can rescue the original music scene (and let them lead their super heroic lives even while the suns is up)

you do know that the beauty about true superheroes is that they infact lead normal lives like the rest of us.. thats how we can relate to them [in your view the music] so easily.. name a superhero that was all rich glamorous n basking in glory… none.

but then again you do have a point. its a commercial world and everything has a price. and musicians are one of the most worthy price-indulgers.. its high time we actively tried doing something like writing more laws, establishing a recording label, or even buyin crap-ass sounding cd’s for 200rf to show our appreciation.. less talk and more action?

now That sounds like a superhero’s job to me O_o
