Its great that our musicians take part in these universal events. But my worry is the sound. Up till now there has never been a good sound set by a Maldivian. Once a Zero Degree show at Olympus had a good sound where a foreigner set the sound. All the “mudhims” of sound in Maldives like Habyb, Azim, Faid or the Voice of M guys have (sorry guys) failed to make a good sound. They say that Ikram does a good job . . .but does an average job. They all blame someone else or something else for not being able to set the sound. And when these kinds of events come up they all come forward running . . just to have their names as, you know, the “sound guys”. But Good Luck to all participants . . . you all are gonna be live on the net.

Great to see local artistes live on msn . . . but good luck with the sound, guys. As far as I know there is no proper sound-engineer in Maldives. All are self-made . . . like Azim, Faid, Voice of Maldives guys and Ikuram. They wont know the real trade but will come up with quite a few reasons why they cannot set the sound properly.

Hello Guys…
I think good sound comes with a good band or good music. You will understand this if u know the difference between noise and sound. The main PA enlarges whats produced on the stage. Ofcourse the mixing and various kinds of processing is there and is equally important.
Let me give you one good reason why I believe the sound was good lastnite. There were hardly any feedback or tecnical problems in Maldives while Madonna had trouble performing lastnte. For sure the sound engineer of Madonna would be qualified dho!
Another example is that bands like Nothnegal, 1984 and Shiuz was awsome. They performed well so they sounded well. But Zero Degree Atoll was aweful. when they came on stage there happened to be so many technical problems. I guess something is wrong with ZDA now a days. Cos even their last concert sounded horrible. Is it really the sound or the performance that matters…? Sound does not come alone.
I happen to meet few guys who have done SAE (School of Audio Engineering) training programs. None of them can really come up with possible solutions… but impossible cinarios rather…. talk of sophisticated equipments. But out of these SAE trained guys there was just one guy who sounded sensible and practical. He did not talk about the equipments but ways of doing it with the available resources here. He also said that no matter what formulas or theorys u study…. Its your ears that u will have to trust and depend on. Not your certificate.
Perhaps its true… cos its not the equipments which makes one a professional. A professional is the person who does his job with whats is available.

when would the organisers and the bands realize that in such a global event, the local event displayed a bunch of copy cats??? More than half the bands played covers!! how many of the bands realize it would not be broadcast due to international copyright issues?? the cover bands ruin such chances for original bands like zero degree atoll, shiuz, traphic jam, damned to name a few.

PEOPLE…we are talking about our music, our musicians…no matter wht they i know that they try to do their level best…i wonder if the international viewers understand wht the hell kayano or the other bands yell out…maybe they consider it as NOISE…heheh…we need to make some good music…i like all the bands ingey they are all good in their music..
July 10th, 2007 at 02:22
well in my opinion the show was very good compared to most maldivian events, and sound was cool too. and talking about the bands… for me appi, shiuz, nothnegal and anil really caught my attention. and zero degree performed with perfection as usual, i dont know much about the sound stuff. appi really knows how to handle the stuff he play and i was really impressed with the slide guitar thing. he shows that he could be good at any instrument when he plays both drums, guitars and even vocals, he has a good future. shiuz is probably one of the best acoustic artists in the country right now. nothnegal surprised me with the stuff they played and the harmonized solos on keyboards and guitars together was just unbelievable for such a young band. They didnt make any notable mistakes on the songs they played but i noticed that the drummer got confused when the sound crew told them to stop when it began raining so stopped and tried to continue when he saw the rest of the band play but began on an off beat (maybe he got nervous) but got on track it after a few seconds. i dont call that a mistake, that could have happened to anybody. i’m sure there would have been a lot of problems onstage at that time since the monitors and everything got covered as soon as it began raining but still the band managed to hold the crowd and continue with what they were playing until the end without anymore problems, they really acted experienced even though they are young. they did prove that they were fit enough to play on big events and were able to stand out and make a name among the rest of the much more experienced bands that played in the show. and also they even played an own song of theirs which sounded so good that i didnt know it was a maldivian band’s creation and didnt see any difference in it from the covers they played. i look forward to see nothnegal perform again and see their own songs recorded and being performed live. this was the first time i have seen them, for me they are one of the leading metal bands in the maldives along with bands like serenity dies. and anil was just amazing, for me he was better than fasy. the way he handled the whammy bar and everything was just great. he should expose his talents more and more in the maldivian community, he really got what it takes to get to the top. i was opened mouthed when they began ‘breaking the law’ it was so good. i do hope to see more events like these in the future.
July 10th, 2007 at 10:55
Dynamix I TOTALLY agree with you….
July 10th, 2007 at 12:49
Yes… Nothnegal gave the best performance amongst the rock bands. I noticed that every member knew what he was playing and whats happening in the song. the solos and arpeggios were well handled. vocals too…. keyboard was well placed and performed in the arrangement. I see a lot of room for them to improve in future. if they stick together ofcourse.
Appi yes… something new to maldives…. slide guitar…! very talented.. hope he’l continue his music to become one of the best in town…..
Shiuz, no doubt the best vocal performance of the whole show… the greatest thing in him is that he knows to compose for him…. I really like his songs…
Anil did perform well. But it was just him alone. The basist and the drummer was hopeless… I dont think Anil is better than Fasy… cos Fasy has style and he performs pure rock with confidence and sound musical.. But Anil doesn’t have a style…. lacks musicianship. I see him lost in his performance…. not knowing where to go…
Anyways… I wish all the musicians the best… no doubt maldives has got a lt of talent… and we need to provide them platforms and exposure…. and guide them in the right path…

July 12th, 2007 at 00:41
the sound guys did an awesome job, they worked to set up the sound for individual bands over 4 days i guess. Zero Degree’s sound was bad coz they came and arranged there “own” drumset and boduberu set at the last minute (i saw them arranging it around 7:15pm that night). So lets not blame anyone on this… the sound, the bands, the lights… the show was simply great!!!
July 12th, 2007 at 09:47
Hey I agree with frustrator . .100%. You’ve enlightened me with so much. Thats very true about the sound. Its what is being played on stage that is amplified. Like you said ZDA does have a sound problem whenever they perform nowadays. Is it a “Mohamed Ameen” syndrome? They perform, they set sound, they have separate instruments and they want to be no. 1 forever . .is it? Please comment frustrator. I like your comments. They are very solid, man. You really are someone who knows music and musicians in Maldives.
July 13th, 2007 at 00:04
i think handling the sound for such concerts with more than 10 bands is not an easy task. so i think faid and the island music sound crew did a very good job. i was there on stage during sound check and everything seemed well in control. and the on-stage crew was awesome… this is the first time ive seen onstage crew standing by for the musicians aid if needed. so i think this is a very good improvement… yes monitoring on stage wasn\\\’t as good as expected..so bands might find it hard hearing themselves … resulting in mistakes and what not.. but then again, this is a huge concert so it just might not be perfect. i think the sound crew did a great job…the bands, well nothnegal was cool… we need more variety of music…not only metal, rock, thrash or death metal. what about alternative, pop, reggae, blues .. etc. its nice to see 1984 play again. i have to say, faizen(their vocalist) can sing like no one in male\\\’. like him, we need more vocalists who can sing with their hearts with feel. cut that technical crap. feeling is all that we need. and still there are so few bands who play with feel to this day.. so i encourage all the bands to keep playing with your hearts. play any kinda music that you like. it doesnt necesarily have to be in any existing genre, thats how u become unique. all in al, i think the music scene in male\\\’ is improving at a very fast pace..so congrats to all you new bands, i hope to see more kinda music in male\\\’. ild like t thank island music for their troubles with making OUR sound better with each show.

December 21st, 2007 at 18:38
frustrator!! i read ur opinions on zero degree atoll in a prior blog..i just thoguht id let you know….
ok first of all!!!!!!!
frustrator you need to get ur facts straight before u make smart assed comments!!
you are entitled to ur own opinions..but it would be good if you know what you are talking about!!
do you know who composed what songs on the dhoni album?? if you did, you would know tht nashid composed SEVEN of the songs in the album!!
and also..what you said about nashids solo album… you must really know more than the musicians and judges at the NEW YORK INTERNATIONAL MUSIC FESTIVAL!!
since they awarded nashid the best blues artist of the year award for his so called (in UR humble opinion)..”"”The Blues album was never close to a “standardâ€Â. All you can hear is some sessionist gigging.”"”
TALK SENSE MAN!!!! YOU DONT KNOW JACK SHIT!!!
