Fête de la Musique (World Music Day) 2009

Some bands are marking the World Music Day here in the Maldives.  Marking Fête de la Musique was initiated in 2007 by Association Franco-Maldivienne, an NGO dedicated to introducing French language and culture.

According to the event’s Facebook page, the following bands will be performing in Muni Ufaa on the 25th June 2009, late evening.

  1. Gem Stone
  2. Xn Jam
  3. Out of Doors – Abcy
  4. The Agents of Orange
  5. A Chord Sequence
  6. 1984
  7. Chapter
  8. theDamnedones
  9. Varutha [Bodu Beru]

Background

The idea was first floated by the American musician Joel Cohen in 1976, which was lated picked up by French Music and Dance director Maurice Fleuret for Minister of Culture, Jack Lang in 1981.  The first event of its kind took place in 1982.

The purpose of  Fête de la Musique is to promote music in two ways:

  1. Amatuer and professional musicians are encouraged to perform in the streets
  2. All concerts must be free to the public, and all performers donate their time for free, making all genres of music accesible to the public. Source

Whether Maldivian authorities and musicians from a broader cross-section of the music community in Maldives, are ready embrace this concept and contribute to this event remains to be seen.
