Can Music Really Heal the World?

The past two weeks the death of the King of Pop had made headlines all around the world. His life of controversy will never reveal its secret with his passing. One thing we cannot dispute is the greatness of his music.

M.J was and still is an iconic musician that influenced thousands and inspired millions around the world.  His global phenomenon hit song “Heal The World” achieved a lot of healing through out. It was co-written and produced by the best in the business – the song calls out for healing and peace and love.

It is my opinion that music can heal the world!!!

There is so much confusion, politics and anti-social behaviour amongst the youth of today. Do you think it maybe if we give them more opportunities via musical stages that a difference can be made? Maybe it is time for all of Maldivian musicians to come together and cry and sing their hearts out for Peace and Love amongst us.

Do you not think they can Heal so many wounds if that ought to happen? So it is time we have that “Show” that can bring together all the local talents onto one stage and create at least a day of PEACE and Brotherhood and sisterhood.

Give your opinion on if MUSIC can HEAL the WORLD!!! IS it a tool for making PEACE?

Music Association of Maldives

Music Association of  Maldives (MAM) which commenced in 15th March 2009, is the industry body for the music  sector, including composers, songwriters, lyricists, performers and music publishers.

Activities fall into separate groups:  promoting the interests of the industry and growing the number of Maldivians who play music for their education, for health or for fun, and regardless of age or music genre.

The MAS acts with no bias.  Our philosophy is, to act on behalf and for the benefit of all, neither harming nor advantaging any individual member. The MAM would work mainly on 4 objectives:

  • Researching the history of Maldivian Music and develop the diminishing cultural music of Maldives. Hence, creating a hype of Maldivian influenced music to be aired even on the media levels
  • Creating a collective management society to aid artist’s original works with the help of government entities and laws
  • Making a platform for the new and current musicians, who are based upon commercial music performance, mainly resort music.
  • Negotiating and implementation with interested foreign  parties, so as to bring an international recognized music school to the Maldives and further exchange programs

All these visions could be carried with the help of all related personnel in the music scene and we need your utmost ideas and help to implement these goals. With regard to this, we are inviting all musicians to a brainstorming session with us, on the 6th of July 2009 at 12.00pm, in the MCSE seminar room.

Fête de la Musique (World Music Day) 2009

Some bands are marking the World Music Day here in the Maldives.  Marking Fête de la Musique was initiated in 2007 by Association Franco-Maldivienne, an NGO dedicated to introducing French language and culture.

According to the event’s Facebook page, the following bands will be performing in Muni Ufaa on the 25th June 2009, late evening.

  1. Gem Stone
  2. Xn Jam
  3. Out of Doors – Abcy
  4. The Agents of Orange
  5. A Chord Sequence
  6. 1984
  7. Chapter
  8. theDamnedones
  9. Varutha [Bodu Beru]

Background

The idea was first floated by the American musician Joel Cohen in 1976, which was lated picked up by French Music and Dance director Maurice Fleuret for Minister of Culture, Jack Lang in 1981.  The first event of its kind took place in 1982.

The purpose of  Fête de la Musique is to promote music in two ways:

  1. Amatuer and professional musicians are encouraged to perform in the streets
  2. All concerts must be free to the public, and all performers donate their time for free, making all genres of music accesible to the public. Source

Whether Maldivian authorities and musicians from a broader cross-section of the music community in Maldives, are ready embrace this concept and contribute to this event remains to be seen.

Traphic Jam is OK

Breakout Festival was the music fiesta of 2008. With many local bands competing with original material and playing their hearts out for fans and judges; showcased the young potential talents of today. A hearty congratulations to Traphic Jam who came out as winners and on top. This definitely created controversy and ill feelings and ego clashes amongst a lot of musicians and music lovers.

While Trio played their melodic romantic tunes i have to say their final night performance missed the originality and the heavy distorted guitars spoiled it for me. I love the original Trio feel which was at a lack that night. Gianscore is the original hard rock [heavily Jimi Hendrix influenced] band of all times yet. The teeth picking by Vitte definitely was a memorable experience; very probably a first on a Maldivian music show. They have grown as a band and the performance was quite tight. Unfortunately theirs was too much a copy than original and the lyrics in English though poetic lacked the “listener identifying with self” factor. They ahve come a long way from winning the first battle of the bands contest in Maldives. They definitely have the ability to be an international success if they can hold it together.Colorful and original was 1984 with Appi as the front man. Their experimentation into almost psychedelic realms of music with a Radiohead feel and easy listing melodies that were catchy, still lacked the “X” factor. Definitely the best dressed and musically rich band of the competition.

The final act of the show was Traphic Jam and they stole it. They had the crowd singing and head banging and feeling every word that came out of Kayano’s mouth. Their new song which was first played on the finals “OK OK” was i believe their secret weapon that sealed the deal. Quite upbeat but with a catchy riff from Faube and a chorus to die for. Short but powerful! As always the songs radiated the feelings and emotions of a lot of Maldivians and their sufferings in life. They had the “listener identifying with self” factor in their lyrics. They had the ultimate advantage of lyrics being in Dhivehi and voters giving 30% of the final score. Traphic Jam has matured and become a popular act that definitely fills a arena for their loud political and social issue songs and explicit communication with the crowd.

All i can say is they have done it hence let us be proud and see how they do at the international tour with Fasy Live and other British bands. And all the other finalists can be really proud as they all did great and exceptionally. I am pretty sure there will be much more opportunities of this sought int he near future. Good luck T.J!!!
